Q&A With Bridget Wojciak About Kroger Health’s Telenutrition Service

Now more than ever, Americans are experiencing massive shifts in the ways they find, select, and prepare foods. Whether a change in employment has led to concerns around the family food budget or a self-quarantine situation is placing you in front of a frying pan for the first time in years, when it comes to COVID-19 and eating, everything can feel different. As part of Kroger Health’s COVID-19 action plan, Registered Dietitian-led Telenutrition services are being offered free to all during the crisis. Kroger Health is committed to helping every American access the education, expert guidance, and resources needed to stay healthy and nourished in an uncertain time.

What is telenutrition, and how does it work? Telenutrition connects you with a dietitian safely from the comfort of your home using a smartphone, tablet, or desktop device with internet or cell service. We recently sat down with Bridget Wojciak, Registered Dietitian and Director of Nutrition at Kroger Health to find out more about this offering.
  1. Who do you recommend the Telenutrition service is for?
    We say this service is for everyone - and we mean it! Right now, we are offering this service free to all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Telenutrition service can help every single one of our customers find the education, expert guidance, and resources to ensure they have the support they need around food and personalized nutrition needs.
  2. Share with us what a typical experience/journey of an appointment looks like?
    We always begin each personalized appointment by reviewing a few “get to know you” questions. Food and nutrition are complex pieces of everyday life. It’s our job to hear you out and ensure we address the needs and outcomes that matter most to you. Based on your goals, we will begin to dive into the specifics. Whether you need recipe ideas, better-for-you recommendations, or foods that help with specific health conditions, our specially trained dietitians can share information and expert guidance, assist in how to read the nutrition labels and ingredients of products, and even screen share and help you navigate through Kroger Ship to place an order. We can also help customers locate food banks and other food access programs in their area.
  3. How many appointments does an average customer schedule with a dietitian?
    The number of appointments can vary based on the needs of each customer. We have customers that find one appointment equips them with the information and resources they need at that time. In contrast, many others find success in further nutrition counseling and will schedule ongoing virtual appointments with a dietitian for continued support, education, and accountability. Each customer has their own personal health journey, and our team is grateful that we can offer these Telenutrition services during these times of social distancing.
  4. What are most customers that schedule appointments looking for?
    Our customers are looking for a variety of things - healthy alternatives, delicious and personalized recipe inspiration for their changing schedules, nutrition counseling based on medical conditions, viewing food through a positive and empowering lens, how to navigate the grocery store safely and quickly, and how to nourish themselves on a budget. Increasingly, during this crisis, customers are also looking for ways to stretch their grocery budget even further, locate community support networks that can help with food access, and learn more about how to shop for and prepare foods with longer shelf lives. We are here to help reduce the stress around cooking and eating while helping you enjoy the foods you choose.
  5. How long does an appointment take?
    We allocate 60 mins for each appointment. We’ve found that this length of time allows us to fully address needs and questions as we conduct the counseling session.
