Kroger Acquires Significant Pharmacy Business from Wisconsin-based Shopko
(CINCINNATI - December 11, 2018) - The Kroger Co. (NYSE: KR), the parent company of Pick 'n Save, Metro Market and Copps stores in Wisconsin, announced today its purchase of some of Shopko Inc.’s pharmacy business. Kroger will acquire the pharmacy files of 42 Shopko locations, 25 of which are located in Wisconsin. The additional 17 stores included in the transfer are located in Utah, Nebraska, Idaho, Washington and Montana.
"We are excited to welcome former Shopko customers into the Kroger community," said Colleen Lindholz, President, Kroger Health. "This acquisition demonstrates our long term and ongoing investment in and commitment to Wisconsin. Pharmacy is such a vital component of our business and expanding the number of potential pharmacy customers gives us the opportunity to further execute our vision of helping people live healthier lives. That's really what it all comes down to-the customer and their experience in our stores, pharmacies and clinics."
Kroger's expansion into Wisconsin began with its purchase of Roundy's in 2015. Since then Kroger has invested $300 million in its 106 stores and 13,000 employees in Wisconsin. Kroger pharmacies receiving the Shopko files include locations in Appleton, Fond du Lac, Grafton, Green Bay, Kenosha, Kimberly, Manitowoc, Marshfield, Menasha, Neenah, Oshkosh, Plover, Racine, Rothschild, Sheboygan, Stevens Point, Sussex, Watertown, Wausau, West Bend and Wisconsin Rapids. Pharmacies will also be built in two more locations in January 2019.
Making the transition from Shopko easy and convenient for customers is a top priority for Kroger. Customers of the Wisconsin Shopko pharmacies impacted by the acquisition will have their prescriptions transferred to their local Kroger-owned stores. The official file transfer will occur the week of January 6, 2019, but Shopko customers can easily transfer prescriptions to their preferred Kroger-owned pharmacy immediately. An added benefit for transitioning Shopko customers is the ability to pick up their prescriptions and their groceries at one time and in one store.
"All Shopko customers need to do is select which of our pharmacies works best for them," said James Hyland, Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs, Roundy's Supermarket. "We want to make customers' lives easier, keep the transfer process simple and reassure our new customers from Shopko they are in good hands."
Kroger's increasing expansion and investment in its pharmacy business is part of its Restock Kroger initiative, which aims to revamp the customer experience.
