While COVID-19 has been the clear focus of our healthcare conversations over the past several months, it’s important to remember that managing overall health- including any chronic conditions present- remains very important. Just as you’ve relied on your pharmacist as a trusted source of information and guidance in the past, they are standing at the ready to be your expert resource through this COVID-19 crisis. Here are 4 key questions to ask your pharmacist to ensure you are closing any gaps as it relates to your overall health during the pandemic.
  1. What can I be doing to stay healthy?
In addition to doing all you can to protect yourself from COVID, it is important to continue with your normal healthy routines such as exercising, eating well, and getting enough sleep. If you did not already have a healthy routine before the pandemic, this is a great time to get started! Eating healthy and being active can help to prevent or control many chronic conditions. If you are diagnosed with a chronic condition, now more than ever, it’s critical to stay adherent to your medication routine. Managing your chronic conditions well during this time is not only the best way to minimize the overall impact of your disease, but it could also mean keeping you out of crowded hospitals where COVID-19 is present. If you have any questions about your medications, including the ability to afford them, please reach out to your pharmacist. If you have concerns about coming into the pharmacy to pick up your medications, speak to your pharmacist about alternative options such as medication delivery, curbside pickup, or new safety practices being implemented at the drive-thru.
  2. What over-the-counter medications should I be purchasing?
Your pharmacists can guide you through the process of selecting the right non-prescription medications to have on hand during the pandemic. It’s critical to have these conversations early, as catching the virus could mean you won’t be able to visit the store to get what you need. Your pharmacist can also help answer questions you may have about how COVID-19 may impact other chronic conditions you may have, such as asthma or diabetes, and how to best manage these, should the need arise.
  3. What drugs are available to treat me if I happen to contract COVID-19?
This situation is ever-evolving, but your pharmacist is an expert, and they will be able to advise you on the latest guidance from the CDC and FDA. Keep in mind, most people who contract COVID-19 have mild illness and are able to recover at home with supportive therapies.

Currently, several drugs are still being tested around the world in hospital settings, and no single one has been shown to be fully effective. For more information about drugs being studied, you can also check out our Kroger pharmacist-authored blog on this topic here.
  4. Should I get tested for COVID-19?
At Kroger, we are leading the way in pharmacist-led COVID-19 testing. Recently in Novi, Michigan, we launched our first pharmacist-led testing site in the nation, and are working with local and state governments to empower our pharmacists to lead testing site rollouts across the country. To understand if you’re eligible for testing, or learn more about COVID-19 testing availability, speak with any Kroger pharmacistor take our online screening assessment to provide you a proposed care plan and to be linked to available testing locations.
